Hike from Waldegg via Dürnberg, Bockleiten and the Große Klause on the Hohe Wand to the Waldeggerhaus.
Waldegg an der Piesting lies on the north side of the Hohe Wand. The place is the ideal starting point for a hike to the Waldeggerhaus, and not just because of its apt name. The start of the tour is easily accessible both by public transport and by car. Before the ascent, you can fortify yourself at the "s'Erste" inn. The ascent to the Hohe Wand is via mountain hiking trails through pleasantly quiet forests. Alternative ascent options lead from Dürnbach via the Stanglsteinweg or via the Große Klause via ferrata.
Our destination, the traditional Waldeggerhaus on the Hohe Wand, which is run by Wuffi and Susi, the fourth generation of the Apfler family, is located at 1002 meters above sea level. The cuisine at the mountain inn is also traditional. Hungry hikers can expect home-style cooking with Wiener schnitzel and roast pork with bread dumplings. You can also enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of Schneeberg and Ötscher, as well as fantastic sunsets at a later hour. The house can also be reached by car. We also recommend a hike through the Hohe Wand Nature Park, for example via the Ötscherblick circuit, as well as a visit to the nearby viewing tower and the Alpine and Local History Museum at the Naturparkspüberl.
Your hikes in the Wiener Alpen should be a thoroughly enjoyable and safe experience. Please observe the following:
Preparation
Make sure when choosing the route that it matches your experience and fitness. Check the weather report in advance. Weather in the mountains can change rapidly. Always set off properly equipped (e.g., rain protection).
Check whether the huts and snack stations you want to visit are open. Inform someone about your route choice and planned return before you leave.
You can find more safety tips for your hike here.
Always take appropriate maps with you. Wear sturdy shoes suitable for the route, bring sun and rain protection as well as water and a snack. Take your mobile phone with you and save the mountain rescue emergency number: 140
From the station, we go east toward the municipal office. Past the municipal office, we turn right onto Peisching. At the intersection, we turn right again onto Oskar-Helmer-Gasse and shortly after turn left onto Brand. The route continues straight along a path and then again along the street turning right onto a trail. We follow the red marking. Over the trail, we reach a street onto which we turn left. A little after the curve, we turn left again onto another trail. We turn sharply left and continue straight until we turn sharply left again. We follow the trail to the right and arrive at an intersection with the Große Klause via ferrata. Here we turn left and then right again. From now on, we follow the blue-marked path. Straight ahead without branching, we reach the Waldeggerhaus.
Parking available at Waldegg station.
Take the A2 South Motorway, exit Wöllersdorf, and drive on B21 toward Wöllersdorf/Wr. Neustadt-Nord. Keep right at the fork and continue on Gutensteiner Straße/B21. Follow Gutensteiner Straße/B21. Continue on B21. Turn right onto Waldegg in Waldegg and continue toward the station.
