More than 200 caves in the Hohe Wand area

Caves not developed

for tourism This habitat type includes only those caves that are not used for tourism and lack infrastructure such as lighting, laid-out paths or footbridges, etc. In the cave register, all Austrian caves are uniquely identified by their number, both geographically in relation to the mountain range and in relation to other caves with the same name.  More than 200 small caves are

listed in the cave register for the Hohe Wand area. Caves are particularly important for wildlife. In addition to disturbance caused by visitors, a threat to the cave’s wildlife arises from the blocking of cave entrances (e.g. with boards), which renders the caves inaccessible to bats, for example, or can turn them into traps.
