Sustainability in the nature reserve
The Hohe Wand Nature Park is committed to sustainable development and the preservation of the region’s diverse cultural landscape. For 55 years, the nature park has been working to protect the region’s biodiversity and raise awareness of its value. In line with the four-pillar philosophy of Austrian nature parks (conservation, recreation, education and regional development), comprehensive measures are being implemented to enhance biodiversity and knowledge of it.
A significant step in sustainable regional development was the expansion of the visitor centre in 2016, which was fitted with a photovoltaic system in spring 2024. An electric vehicle charging point has been available since 2016 to promote environmentally friendly mobility. When purchasing work materials and supplies, the nature park places great emphasis on regional sourcing, seasonality and sustainability. The shop’s range offers a wide selection of regional products.
The Nature Park is strongly committed to waste management. Waste separation and reduction are key priorities. The use of PET bottles has been reduced and replaced with refillable glass bottles produced by local producers. Several waste collection points on the site encourage visitors to separate their waste. Furthermore, cleaning products with eco-labels are primarily used.
Raising awareness plays an important role, particularly among children. Free giveaways such as the Nature Park Memory game and many others promote environmental awareness even among the youngest visitors. Brochures and leaflets are printed on recycled paper certified by the Austrian Ecolabel to ensure sustainability here too.
A particular highlight is the nature park’s new treasure trail, which showcases the ‘Treasures of the Hohe Wand’. All existing facilities and buildings were incorporated into this, meaning that only a few of the 38 stations had to be newly built. This approach underscores the nature park’s commitment to sustainability by making optimal use of existing resources.
Overall, the Hohe Wand Nature Park, as a small organisation, contributes to sustainability through a wide range of measures. Tourism plays a leading role in this regard and, through the large number of visitors, helps to promote sustainable practices. In this way, the nature park remains a popular excursion destination for future generations and preserves the region’s unique natural environment.
