Since 1926, the Rax Cable Car has been taking guests from the Reichenau neighborhood of Hirschwang up to the Rax Plateau, which stands at 1,546 meters. After the 8-minute ride, visitors can enjoy a variety of hikes with unique views—whether in summer or winter.
Rax Mountain Adventure
Thanks to the high density of huts, “hut hopping” on the Rax is extremely popular. The starting point for five different routes is either the Rax Cable Car’s summit station or Preiner Gscheid. The routes pass by up to seven huts that serve food and drinks. The trail from the summit station to the Jakobskogel is particularly family-friendly and ideal for beginners. For those seeking a greater challenge, however, the Rax traverse to Preiner Gscheid is highly recommended.
Winter Adventures on the Rax
In winter, the Rax Plateau, with its tranquil landscape, is ideal for snowshoeing. Marked trails start right at the mountain inn and are well-suited for beginners and those looking to take it easy. The necessary equipment can be rented on-site. Guided tours led by experienced guides are also offered—perfect for anyone who doesn’t want to explore the area alone.
Car-Free Access to the Mountain
The Rax is easily accessible by public transportation. From Graz and Vienna, you can reach the Payerbach-Reichenau train station in about an hour by train. From there, a regular bus runs directly to the valley station of the Rax cable car. Alternatively, the RUFbus Semmering-Rax can be used for a customized trip. On Sundays and holidays, the Höllentalbahn also runs—a nostalgic local railway with historic cars that makes even the journey there a special experience. From the Höllentalbahn’s terminal station, the cable car’s valley station is about a 30-minute walk away.
2026 is a year of anniversaries in the Semmering-Rax region: the 100th anniversary of the Rax Cable Car and numerous other milestones will be celebrated.
