Description

Easy and relaxed ride up the highest mountain in Lower Austria.

The Schneebergbahn has been taking you up Lower Austria's highest mountain in an easy and relaxed way since 1897. Enjoy the breathtaking Alpine panorama in the hiking paradise of Schneeberg, just 80 kilometers south of Vienna.

The Schneebergbahn cable car takes nature lovers up the Schneeberg between May and December. At 2,076 meters, the Schneeberg is not only the highest peak in Lower Austria, but also the easternmost and northernmost two-thousand-meter peak in the Alps, 80 kilometers from Vienna Alps.

As in the days of the emperor, you can still climb the Schneeberg today. However, today guests can choose between the 125-year-old nostalgic steam train (90-minute journey time) and the Salamander railcar (40 minutes), which has been in service since 1999. The train starts at the station in Puchberg, which is easily accessible thanks to numerous ÖBB connections. During the journey, you can enjoy the breathtaking scenery, which changes a little with every metre of altitude, overcoming 1,200 meters in altitude and reaching the highest railroad station in Austria at 1,795 meters.
