Description
The Rax cable car has been taking guests from the Hirschwang district of Reichenau up to the 1,546-metre-high Rax plateau since 1926. After the 8-minute ride, there are many varied hikes with unique views - whether in summer or winter.
Rax mountain experience
Due to the high density of huts, the so-called hut hopping on the Rax is very popular. The starting point for five different variants is the summit station of the Rax cable car or the Preiner Gscheid. The routes lead past up to seven serviced huts. The trail from the summit station to Jakobskogel is particularly family-friendly and ideal for beginners. However, if you are looking for a greater challenge, we recommend the Rax crossing to Preiner Gscheid.
Winter adventure on the Rax
In winter, the Rax plateau with its tranquil landscape is ideal for snowshoe hikes. Marked routes that are suitable for beginners and connoisseurs start directly at the Berggasthof. Suitable equipment can be hired on site. Guided tours with experienced guides are also available - perfect for those who don't want to explore the area alone.
Car-free access to the mountain
The Rax is easily accessible by public transport. From Graz and Vienna, it takes around an hour by train to Payerbach-Reichenau station. From there, a public bus takes you directly to the valley station of the Rax cable car. Alternatively, the RUFbus Semmering-Rax can be used for an individual journey. On Sundays and public holidays, the Höllentalbahn also runs - a nostalgic local train with historic carriages that makes even the journey there a special experience. The valley station of the cable car is around 30 minutes' walk from the Höllentalbahn terminus.
