Description
Since 1926, the Rax cable car has been transporting guests from the Reichenau district of Hirschwang to the 1,546-meter-high Rax plateau. After the 8-minute ride, there are many varied hikes with unique views to enjoy – whether in summer or winter.
Mountain experience on the Rax
Due to the many huts on the Rax, hut hopping is very popular. The starting point for five different routes is either the mountain station of the Rax cable car or the Preiner Gscheid. The routes pass seven huts offering food and drink. The route from the mountain station to Jakobskogel is particularly family-friendly and ideal for beginners. For those looking for a greater challenge, we recommend the Rax crossing to Preiner Gscheid.
Winter experience on the Rax
In winter, the Rax plateau with its tranquil landscape is ideal for snowshoe hikes. Marked routes suitable for beginners and leisure hikers start right at the Raxalm Berggasthof. The equipment can be rented on site. Guided tours with experienced guides are also available – perfect for those who don't want to explore the area on their own.
Public transport
The Rax is easily accessible by public transport. From Graz and Vienna, you can reach Payerbach-Reichenau station by train in about an hour. From there, a bus takes you directly to the valley station of the Rax cable car. Alternatively, the RUFbus Semmering-Rax - Autofreie Ausflügecan be used for individual travel. On Sundays and public holidays, the Höllentalbahn also runs – a nostalgic local railway with historic carriages that makes the journey itself a special experience. From the Höllentalbahn terminus, the valley station of the cable car can be reached on foot in about 30 minutes.
